Foodji survey: Lunch breaks are often far removed from the dream

Munich, October 23, 2023 — No meal is as important to employees as lunch — this is shown by a survey by Munich-based food tech company Foodji. When surveying 1,033 customers, every second person named lunch as the most important meal of the day. This places it well ahead of breakfast (32.6%) and dinner (17.5%).
Lunch break creates time for exchange with the team
During their lunch break, the interviewees focus on the essentials: They primarily want to satisfy their hunger (64%) and recharge their batteries through food (53%). In addition, exchange with other team members is also important to them (41%), as is time for themselves (35%). The lunch break therefore also meets social and psychological needs. However, more than half of the respondents (56%) take a maximum of half an hour to do so. It can be assumed that many will also lose some of it in the procurement of food.
It should be healthy, sustainable and inexpensive
Despite the tight time frame, the demands placed on the choice of food are high: taste (99%), freshness (97%) and a positive impact on health (92%) are the most important for the interviewees. The prize also plays an important role for just under nine out of ten participants. This should be as low as possible: Almost half of the respondents (48%) do not want to spend more than five euros on lunch.
However, the majority of respondents do not want to make any compromises when it comes to sustainability: For 79 percent, this factor is relevant when choosing their food. In practice, the corresponding respondents want to implement sustainability by avoiding food waste (98%) and placing value on environmentally friendly packaging of the food consumed (94%).
Intelligent break food: More time for the essentials
“Our survey shows how important lunch breaks are for many employees,” explains Felix Munte, co-founder and managing director of Foodji. “As a break during the working day
It not only serves to strengthen physically, but also to exchange ideas with colleagues and to relax. The break can therefore also contribute to downstream aspects such as team cohesion and performance. ”
However, as the data shows, there is a contradiction between desire and reality in practice, adds Daniel von Canal, co-founder and managing director of Foodji: “A lack of time and a high level of cost awareness make it difficult for many employees to arrange their break according to their own wishes. With intelligent food vending machines, companies can accommodate their employees at this point. They make it possible to provide fresh and wholesome meals on demand. Thanks to the tax-free meal allowance, employers can also accommodate their team in terms of price. ”
Employees also save time: More than half of the respondents stated that they needed at least ten minutes less for procurement as a result of using vending machines. “This leaves more time for conscious eating, exchanging ideas with colleagues or taking a walk in the fresh air,” adds Daniel from Canal.
Food vending machines: Innovative employee catering thanks to AI
The Munich-based food tech company Foodji operates food vending machines of the same name. These also enable companies without their own canteen to offer their employees fresh and wholesome meals around the clock. In combination with an automated supply chain and AI-based quantity planning, the vending machines are delivered as needed, which minimizes food waste.
For the survey, 1,033 randomly selected FOODJI customers from all over Germany were interviewed via an online questionnaire. They worked in office environments, logistics and production, healthcare and the hotel industry. The survey period was August 2023.
